25th July 1998 - Garth House, Brampton Well this is it, make or break time, the bands first public appearance and my first attempt at fronting a band. We were playing a private party for a local business man who is a friend of the band. This was great to get a first gig but bad because I knew almost everyone there personally. We very nearly didn't get to gig at all though. We're due on at 6pm and we don't have a lead guitarist, Mike was nowhere to be seen. Mike's wife had been taken into hospital that afternoon awaiting their child. Mike, the consummate professional arrived with minutes to spare, set up and we were playing! Now this gig was only planned to last 20 minutes but what a reception we got. My vocals soared…..into totally incorrect keys, tight….is not a word I would use to describe us, Mike's mind was (obviously) on other things and his Vox amp was…quiet, to say the least. But we were having a whale of a time and so were the audience. After 20 minutes the audience demanded we play more, and that's just what we did even if most of our songs were repeated. We ended up playing for one and a half hours straight!! And eventually just ran clean out of songs. We learned a lot at that gig! Click here for the Equipment List Click here for the Top Of The Page
4th October 1998 - Hare & Hounds, Talkin Village Our first paying gig, and our first with a full set. This gig was originally planned for the August bank holiday but had to be postponed which was probably a good idea as we were only just ready with the full set. Mikes VOX had given up the ghost the week before and so he was using Laurie's Traynor. We had decided to put a little bit more effort into this show by wearing matching kit and acting the part a bit more. Now I was nervous...more nervous than last time...most of the audience I work with or know well, many of them are acomplished musicians in their own right, so the pressure was certainly on. We kicked off into 'move it' as our first number which went well but I was still VERY tense and it showed. '20 flight rock' went well too but then I changed guitars....Now we wanted to inject a little humour into our act BUT knocking all the lightshades off with the guitar headstock, then knocking the guitar stand all over the stage was not what I wanted...but it did amuse the audience. I was not convinced that we had done well at all especially after our 'customised' version of 'not fade away', but we got asked to do two encores and the reaction from the gathered masses (including the pub manageress, who of course was paying the bill...very important!) was one of great support. Once again we learned a lot but we were playing. I think that this will be one of our most difficult gigs ever because of the uncertainty of the reaction of my friends in the audience, now that it's over I have lost any reservations....onward and upward!!! 10th October 1998 - The Conservative Club, Penrith We had put a LOT of time in during this week learning from our last effort. This was to be an important gig for us, if we want to get club bookings in the future then we had to do well here! After last weeks effort I had decided that nothing could possibly produce more pressure and so I was totally chilled out. We were all looking for a good night and thats just what we got. We got a good soundcheck and had a great area to play on with that stage. There was more comedy incorporated into the set, something that we hoped would work in a club environment (it certainly would not in a pub) but we didn't know for sure as we had never tried it. Luckily the comedy went down well. We were booked to do two 1 hour sets so we had a few more numbers to do. This was by far the best we have ever played, live or at practice. There was of course a lot of learning to be done but nothing like last week. The sets went down well and more importantly the reaction from the audience let us know that we had made it. We must have done well....we've been asked back again next year!! Click here for the Equipment List Click here for the Top Of The Page
11th October 1998 - Irthing Centre, Brampton This was a charity special for the MacMillan Nurses. We were playing alongside another local band called Locoweed, who played a lot of Van Morrison type pieces, very well I should add. As they were playing 3 sets and us only one. We were using their PA setup and placing our kit in front of theirs. Not ideal as you may guess. We also didn't have the oportunity of doing a sound check so it was a case of having to guess levels quickly on our set-up and first track. For some reason this worked VERY well. We had a couple of monitoring problems but overall it was as good as the night before. We played a short (35 min) set, a sort of "best of". We will be playing alongside Locoweed at the Irthing centre christmas night on December 12th 1998 so this was an excellent dry run for us. Many thanks to Chas for the use of his PA and his help in setting up. Click here for the Equipment List Click here for the Top Of The Page
20th November 1998 - Down-a-gate, Warwick Bridge Another Charity gig and another long break between shows so time to shake out the cob webs. The night started off in a bad way as someone got it into their heads that we were too loud…before they had even heard us play!! Not a good start. Never mind on with the show..or not, as we waited and waited until the quiz and the raffle and the meal progressed. Not really wanting to play by this time as we could see people preparing to leave and we didn't fancy playing to an empty hall (there weren't many people there in the first place). We did not have to worry, the sets went well and everybody stayed and danced the night away. We put the new Fleetwood Mac numbers into the set for the first time and they went extremely well. 21st November 1998 - Carleton Hall - Penrith A poor attendance spoiled the night somewhat for the organisers but the people who did come were determined to have a good time. Very poor acoustics made setting up a nightmare but we coped well. A great audience made the night for us as they applauded everything we played and were dancing the night away. A minor disaster (number 1) occured for the guys from the 'Inner-Spin' disco when their power amp blew up. That fixed we then had our turn for a minor disaster (number 2) when playing a requested piece as my footswitch decided to go awol over the edge of the stage, unplugging itself in the process and turning a super clean 'Shadows' type sound into a full on distortion which was the amps default, not good. Number 3 came as Mikes amp decided to give up the ghost half way through a song as we both turned around all we could see was smoke willowing around the amp...it took a couple of seconds to realise that the disco guys had just turned on their smoke machine. Plugging Mike into my amps second input saved the day. Click here for the Equipment List Click here for the Top Of The Page
12th December 1998 - Irthing Centre - Brampton The biggest night for the band so far, four bands on stage through the night for the centres christmas special. We were on last and got a great reception from the audience. Severe difficulties with the PA Monitoring caused us a lot of problems but we got through it well. Several people commented that the band was sounding better than ever...thanks! Mike was in fine sound with his brand new Vox AC30, Laurie used one of the other bands bass rig, an Ampeg 8x10 cab & 350 watt Marshall head (nice) and BeeJay hit out with his 100 watt peavey classic for the first time. Finally a big hello to the other bands on the bill, JAMMA, Locoweed and "formed for the event" Wash'n'go, many thanks too to Mick Smith for the use of his PA for the evening and to Chas for his lighting rigs. 19th December 1998 - Station Inn - Kirkpatrick Flemming Last gig of '98 and our first over the border. We dressed up warm for this one as it was out in a car port (in December!!) The space heaters dried out the air making singing difficult and Mikes guitar strings going AWOL on the second song didn't help, but otherwise the night went superbly well. Charlie's family were there in strength to support us and generally we were made to feel very welcome by the locals at the pub. This was the first time that Mikes VOX and BeeJay's Fender had been used together and a lovely combination they turned out to be. After 3 sets (yes 3!!) and an encore we finally finished around one am. Click here for the Equipment List Click here for the Top Of The Page
2nd January 1999 - The Coach House -Heads Nook, Carlisle Start the new year in style we said on our posters, and we meant it!! Another late start & finish and a worrying audience, very young, would they even know what we were playing? we need not have worried. Our first set went off faily quietly as most of the people had not yet arrived but at 11:15 we went on again and boy did we rock. The band is improving with every appearance and the audience enjoy it more and more. We are getting tighter and more confident. This gig has to be one of our best with difficulty getting off the stage for the cries of "just one more" Click here for the Equipment List Click here for the Top Of The Page
14th January 1999 - Mary Casies Bar - Queensberry Hotel - Dumfries Our second jaunt across the border to sunny Scotland and our first in Dumfries. Well what can I say about this gig? By rights it should have been awful!! a VERY quiet night of the week in a bar trying to make an new name and image for itself...and we're the first band they have had on!! Now if I say that this room made the room at Carleton Hall seem acoustically dead, then you will understand just how difficult this room was. At one point we were playing to four people and two of those were next door!! On starting the night we once again had only younger people in the audience and once again they had a whale of a time just proving that our style of music is timeless and fits in with anyone. We scrapped our normal set halfway through and played a more upbeat night, throwing in a few unrehersed, unpracticed numbers such as 'wild thing' very much in the Hendrix rather than the Troggs vein (but luckily Mike didn't set fire to his strat then punch it through the front of his amp!!) overall an excellent night, we got paid, we got asked back, we had fun, the audience had fun and we got a lot of compliments.
